Contact - Toronto Photography Festival Exhibition
This year, I am holding my Contact Exhibition at my studio at 146 Thirtieth Street, Studio 230, Toronto, Ontario. As you are aware, I create my artwork using the traditional black and white process. This provides you with an excellent opportunity to understand how my artwork is created and why it is unique from digital photography.
How to get there
My studio is located between Kipling Ave and Browns Line, just north of Lake Shore Blvd W in South Etobicoke. Unlike downtown, there is free parking. For those on transit, take the 501 Queen Car to Long Branch and get off at Thirtieth Street, it is about a 10 minute walk north on Thirtieth Street. Another option is to take the 110A Bus from Islington Subway Station and get off at Horner and Thirtieth Street and it about a 5 minute walk south on Thirtieth Street.

Contact's theme this year is Pervasive Influence
"CONTACT 2010 will consider the ways in which photography informs and transforms human behavior. The festival will recognize the influence of Marshall McLuhan, on the 30th anniversary year of his death. We will present images that examine connections between mass media, advertising, art and photography. This includes conceptual approaches to photography that utilize the codes of advertising, the language of consumerism, the stylization of marketing campaigns and the force of propaganda. Photojournalism and socially concerned documentary photography will provide a realist-based examination of the emotional and political impact of images and their effect on society and culture. CONTACT 2010 will explore the personal and social consequences of the medium of photography, in a world devoted to the image." For my exhibition, I am exploring Contact's theme of 'Pervasive Influence' through an exhibition called:
Do You Get the Message?
Pear Affair #2Nominated Black and White Spider Awards for the category Still Life | Professional. Click here to read more.
Since the heyday of Marshall McLuhan, the number of communication medium has increased exponentially. These days communication through the internet and other wireless has created opportunities but also challenges.
While exhibiting in New York City, I visited Times Square, a classic example of the proliferation of electronic signs. These are of course there to re-enforce products/brands. We are all familiar with a number of them... Nike, Pepsi, General Electric, Shell, Apple, etc.
In 2006, I had a logo/brand developed. As you are aware it is based on one of my photographs, 'The Pear Affair #2'. People are now recognizing me and my artwork through this brand.
When you arrive at 146 Thirtieth Street, enter through the centre doors and follow the 'pears' to find my studio. Also, make sure to check out what questions 'The Pears' are asking you.
Preview of New Artwork
On a recent visit to a local flower shop, I came across the Clivia plant. The Clivia is native to forest floors of southern Africa. From Africa, it was brought to England in 1854, where it was named to honour Lady Charlotte Clive, Dutchess of Northumberland. Because of the plant's natural ability to survive on shaded forest floors, it quickly gained popularity as a plant well suited to the large shadowy parlors of Victorian homes.
As a member of the amaryllis family, Clivias shares many common characteristics with the more familiar amaryllis. Like the amaryllis, the leaves of a Clivia are strongly two-ranked. This means the long strap-shaped leaves arise from the soil, directly opposite one another in an alternating sequence. Because the leaves are produced in an alternating sequence and they arch directly over one another, a mature Clivia plant will develop a strikingly formal silhouette with almost perfect symmetry, forming what looks like a large flattened vase. The Clivia also has a brilliant orange flower.
It was the symmetry of the leaves that attracted me to create the following pieces. I shot these pictures against a sunflower coloured backdrop over a number of days from buds to fully bloomed flowers.
Here is your opportunity to create a triplet of any three selected images and their arrangement in a single framed presentation. Each image is approximately 9" x 17" with an overall framed size of approximately 41" x 27". The photo edition quantity will be restricted to ten pictures.
As an exclusive offer for you, my valued e-newsletter subscriber and to your family and friends, I offer the triplet at a Preview Price of $1,250 plus taxes; shipping and custom charges extra where applicable. The regular exhibition price is $1,500 plus taxes.
To become a proud owner of a 'Lady Charlotte Clive', call 416-560-9227 or email info@dalemreidphotography.com and quote code 'Clivia2010' with the three images that you would like and in which order. I accept VISA, MasterCard and American Express. A 50% deposit is required with the balance, including shipping and taxes payable when shipped.
